Wood burning stove vs. wood burning fireplace? Which one is better?
Everyone enjoys the warmth of a wood burning fireplace. A fireplace always creates an imagine your mind of a cold evening, curled up by the fire enjoying the warm and cozy atmosphere. Fireplaces are a traditional option. However wood burning stoves are becoming more and more popular. Before you make a choice which option best suits you, there are a few factors that you need to consider.
What do I need to think about when looking at wood burning stoves vs. wood burning fireplaces?
There are several things that you need to consider before deciding on either a wood burning stove or a wood burning fireplace.
Appearance
The appearance of a beautiful fireplace with a unique masonry fireplace surround is not like anything else. The surround of the fireplace can be made from tiles, brick, stone, veneer, marble, wood etc. This catches the eye and is generally the centerpiece of your living room or family room. Furthermore, if it is a wood burning fireplace the smell and the incredible appearance of real flames, cannot be beat.
There is something to be said about a wood burning stove. Stoves now are also available in many different styles from modern to rustic. However, they do not add the same mood as a fireplace. Furthermore, free standing stoves can be a decorative feature of any room. Wood burning stoves also have glass doors which may or may not appeal to same.
If you think that you may want to sell your property further on down the road, a fireplace will most definitely add more value than a stove. It is also something that many home buyers look for when considering a property.
Efficiency
When it comes to efficiency this is also heavily dependent on the model that you choose whether that be a fireplace or stove. The efficiency ratings will vary per individual model. If you want more details on an individual model check out our stove and fireplace shop.
Cost
Cost is generally, a very large factor when you consider buying a fireplace or stove. In most circumstances fireplaces are less expensive than a stove. However, that does not mean you cannot buy an affordable stove in our shop. Additionally, you have to add the cost of installation – whether that be the installation of a fireplace or a stove. Lastly, you may factor in the cost of running your wood burning stove or wood burning fireplace.
Safety
Fire safety is important to all of us, especially those of us with pets or little kids running around. An open wood burning fireplace may not be the best idea if you have young children or even pets. They may wander a little too close to the fire and be burned by a stray ember. A wood burning stove is safer because it has a glass screen door, however, a child may still run up and touch the hot glass.
Regardless of which on you choose, if you live in a home with children and / or pets we highly recommend that you purchase safety gates. Safety gates are a good solution if you want to keep your kids and pets at a safe distance from the fire.
Environmentally friendly
Depending on the model and the efficiency rate, one may be more environmentally friendly than the other. Generally speaking a wood burning stove will burn more of the log, creating less pollution. However, for fireplaces we have different inserts available to make them more efficient than ever before.
